7 Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord, To morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.
2 Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the Lord would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
3 And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die?
4 If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.
5 And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.
6 For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.
7 Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.
8 And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went and hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and hid it.
9 Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.
As with other years, 2018 has gone down as a year filled with the vicissitudes of life, the good, the bad and the ugly were all at play. However our lots in the past year, we must remain grateful to The Almighty God, who graciously spared our lives and brought us into the new year. We all know many were not so blessed and we weren’t better than them, indeed it’s of the mercies of the Lord, we are not consumed.
The passage above succinctly depicts the state of our nation. The economy is obviously in a parlous state, the economic outlook and forecast for the new year is less heart-warming, not to mention the fact, that despite the best efforts of our Army and other security agencies, who daily pay the supreme sacrifice, our security situation is still in dire state. There’s indeed a lot to be concerned about. But at such a time as this, we must rise above the predominant fears pervading the land, we must
detach ourselves from the unreasonable, pessimistic views and noises all over the place and embrace faith in God for a glorious year. We must learn to listen and embrace what God is saying to us as His children rather than what our reality may be screaming at us.
As God spoke by the mouth of Elijah, to the Israelites of a dramatic turnaround, even so has He spoken to us, His children, by the mouth of His chosen vessel that there’s ‘GLORY AHEAD’ and ‘the glory of the latter house shall be greater than the former’. We ought to believe His words and promises, because of his faithfulness and love to us. His thoughts to us are ‘of peace and not evil, to give us an expected end’ (Jer: 29:11)
We should have great expectations because Our God is about to do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; ….(Isaiah 43:19)
Like the four lepers in our text, we must step out in faith, we must not stop taking the risk of success as ‘fortune favours the bold’, we must continually brave the odds and trust God to bless our efforts. If we ‘commit our ways to the Lord, and trust also in Him, He shall bring it to pass – Ps:37:5.
Beloved, as God went before those four men into the camp of the enemy and turn the tides in their favour, even so God has gone ahead of us into this new year, to make things work in our favour if we would dare to step out in faith with positive actions, we would be pleasantly surprised.
More also like the four blessed men, we must have generous hearts to be vessels of
blessings to others, we must not allow greed, scarcity mentality and selfishness to ruin the plans and purpose of God to use us as channels of blessings and harbingers of positive changes to our communities and generation.
Our purpose must not be to amass more than our fair share of the good things of life, rather it should be to spread prosperity, peace and eternal life to all within our spheres of influence.
As we come into the new year we must not be held captive neither by the success nor
frustrations of the past years, rather we must remain optimistic and positive about the new year, we must have ‘GREAT EXPECTATIONS’ and listen to what God is saying par time and act wisely.
I bid you God’s speed, favours and mercies in your 2019 journey.
