“Lord, the task is impossible for me but not for Thee. Lead the way and I will follow. Why should I fear? I am on a Royal Mission. I am in the service of the King of Kings.” With these words, Mary Slessor (1848 – 1915), the Scottish missionary to Nigeria, began her remarkable career in Calabar at 28 years of age. She learned to eat the native food and to speak Efik, the local dialect. She is still credited with the success of stopping the common practice of infanticide of twins among the Ibibio ethnic group. Slessor died of severe fever on 13th January, 1915, while at her remote station near Use Ikot Oku. Today, several memorials in Nigeria, particularly in the eastern part, testify to the value placed on her work and courage.
Courage can be defined as fearlessness in the face of danger. In our Passage, which records the miracle of Jesus when He walked on the water, Peter also walked on the water at the bidding of Jesus. “But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me” (Matt. 14: 30).
Like Peter, there are situations that can bring fear into our lives. Health-care, job loss, bereavement, business and academic failure, accidents or physical assaults are possible scenarios that come with fear. In these circumstances, the Christian can respond to fear with courage. Courage, here, is not by self-will but by faith borne out of conviction that your life is now hidden with Christ in God. (Col. 3: 3) This is possible for those who set their minds on things above, not on earthly things.
The word for you today is that whatever turbulence you are facing at this time, the Lord will grant you the courage to overcome and to testify of the Lord’s power to save in all situations and at all times, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Joshua 1: 9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Lord, I reject the spirit of fear and procrastination. I receive the spirit of power, of love and of a sound mind in Jesus’ name. Amen.
