Some years ago, when a man was travelling to Lagos for the very first time, his pastor gave him a letter of commendation, to any Methodist Church Minister he might come across in Lagos as a faithful brother. He made photocopies of the letter and took them to Lagos. The Church he entered was Abule Oja Methodist Church, Ebute Metta. When he presented the letter, everybody especially the youth warmly received him. Later he discovered that he could not cope with them because of language barrier. He stopped going to Church but his Christian life among the neighbourhood attracted people to him and a family decided to be closer to him. They pleaded with him to go with them to Assemblies of God Church. On reaching there they made him one of the leaders in the Youth Department. Later, he pulled out when he discovered a Methodist Church nearby.
As Christians, our lives should be an open letter for people to read and follow Christ. In Paul’s time, some false teachers had started carrying forged letters of recommendation to authenticate their authority. Paul, however, stated that we needed no such letters. The believers or Christians who have accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour should live a life worthy enough for such recommendation and not a letter written with ink although Paul many times used letters of introduction for people. He wrote the Romans from Corinth to “accept” Phoebe (Rom. 16: 1 – 2) and from Ephesus to the Corinthians for Timothy (1 Cor. 16: 10 – 11). These letters helped Paul’s trusted companions and friends to be welcomed in various Christian Churches he founded in Asia Minor.
The letters of commendation Christians need is an open letter of new hearts and new lifestyles shaped in Christ-like mentorship. This is the promise of God in Jeremiah 31:33 and Ezekiel 11:19; 36:26. No human minister can take credit for this process of conversion. It is the work of God’s Spirit. We do not become believers by following some manuals or using some techniques. Our conversion is a result of God’s implanting Spirit in our hearts, giving us new power to live for Him. Let your life be an open letter for all to read.
2 Corinthians 3: 2 “You are our Epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men.”
God give me the grace to live for You, so that all who come in contact with me will read me and come to Christ. Amen
