Daniel 6: 10 – 11

Legitimate is that for which there is a fair and acceptable reason (valid or justifiable) and disobedience, is failure or refusal to obey. Therefore legitimate disobedience by implication, suggests justifiable refusal to obey.

Are there periods in one’s life time when disobedience is legitimate or when disobedience seems to be the only way out in doing the will of God and obeying His words? The answer is ‘Yes’, using Daniel as a case study.

In Babylon, the King’s word was the law. In Medo-Persian Empire, however, when a law was made, even the king couldn’t change it. The envious men talked Dairus into signing a law effectively making himself a god for 30 days. This could not be broken – not even by a very important officer like Daniel. Another example of the irrevocable nature of the laws of the Medes and Persians can be seen in Esther 8:8.

Daniel stood alone though he knew about the law against praying to anyone except the king. How could a true Jew abandon his obligations to his God because of a mortal man? How would Daniel abandon his daily prayers to worship the King? Daniel would not do such an abomination neither would any Jew. Rather, he continued to pray three times a day as had always done. Daniel had a disciplined prayer life which nothing could interrupt, not even by threats. Daniel made no attempt to hide his daily prayer routine even though he knew he would be disobeying the new law. Daniel continued to pray because he knew that he could not look to the King for guidance and strength that he needed during his difficult times. He knew that only God could provide what he really needed.

Do we allow threats or pressure to shorten our prayer time? Pray regularly, no matter what, for prayer is your lifeline to God. Similarly, don’t allow anything to come in between you and your God. Resist it as Daniel did and God will fight for you.

Daniel 6:10“Then these men assembled and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.”

Good God, help me in my Christian race that I may stand firm against anything that may militate against my faith in you. Help me to always do and say what will give You glory, honour and adoration for I ask through Your Son, Jesus Christ my Lord – Amen.
