An English adage says, “All that glitters is not gold.” Why does Satan tempt us? Temptation is Satan’s Invitation to win us over to his kingdom and abandon God’s paradise. Satan tempted Eve and succeeded in getting her to sin. Ever since, Satan has been busy getting people to sin.
Satan tempted Eve getting her to doubt God’s goodness by presenting to her something fake that seemed very attractive. He lied that God was strict, stingy and selfish for not wanting Adam and Eve to share His knowledge of good and evil. Satan made Eve to forget all that God had given her, and focus on the one thing she could not have. Satan made sin look very attractive to Eve. Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die, for God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Wow! What a fake attractive hope! By this conviction, Eve was attracted to the tree, not knowing that he who makes haste going to war should remember that going to war may mean death. “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate” (NKJV).
Satan tried to make Eve think that sin is good, pleasant and desirable. People usually choose wrong things because they are convinced that those things are good, at least for themselves. Our sins do not always appear ugly to us, and the pleasant looking sins are always the hardest to avoid. So prepare yourselves for the attractive temptations; there is always a way of escape (1 Cor. 13:10). Use God’s word to help you Stand against it. Satan tempted Jesus (Matt. 4:11), but Jesus did not sin.
Guidelines to resist temptation: From Jesus’ examples.
• We must realize that being tempted is not sinful; yielding to it is.
• Run away from whatever can lead you to sin. Follow Paul’s advice to run from those things that produce evil thoughts (2 Tim. 2:22).
• Say ‘No’ when you are confronted with what is wrong. James 1:12 tells us the blessings and rewards for those who resist temptation. Mind where you go and the friends you keep.
Genesis 6:6 “And the Lord was sorry that he made Man on the earth, and he was grieved in his heart”.
God, give me the grace to resist every temptation no matter how attractive it seems, in Jesus’ Name I ask it, Amen.
